Fractured and disconnected thoughts have all collapsed in on me this week and given me no space to breathe. It has taken three weeks to finish a piece of work that could have taken a day.
It was this sense of fragmentation and the threatening disintegration of the body that so touched me in the work of Alina Szapocznikow. A exhibition of her work, ‘Sculpture Undone 1955-1972’ is on at MOMA New York until the end of January. Yet it is artists like her that inspire in me the determination not to give up. After all these little scraps and scrapings, bits and pieces may one day make up a whole…or do I mean hole!
